Your role in a nutshell

The Product Development Chemist’s role will be to develop safe and efficacious products, suitable for mass production, that meets the brand requirements and is in- line with R&l strategy.


The successful candidate will be responsible for meeting deadlines for product launches as well as keeping these within the budget.


The Product Development Chemist will be responsible for manufacturing lab scale batches in laboratory according to R&D priorities and will also have to manage the technical aspect of product development carried out by external vendors.

Key Job Accountabilities:

Product Development:
• Create products through development stages defined with managers: raw materials selection, formulation, appropriate testing plan depending on the project;
• Ensure the quality and safety of formulas;
• Evaluate product performance and sensoriality: ensure the closest sensoriality, stability and conformity;
• Work with support services and/or contacts in industry; monitor and validate product manufacturing (Demi-Grand, factories) at each stage of development;
• Ensure lab resources are in good working order; ensure compliance with safety regulations and quality procedures in force in the laboratory;
• Integrate and develop innovative technologies that offer results the consumer can perceive
• Propose and develop formulas in line with the marketing policy and consumer expectations;

Project Management:
• Officialise formulas in a prompt manner by coordinating and validating all development phases and providing updates on formula availability;
• Emphasise the value of technologies to the businesses through strong product pitches; where necessary, help improve the relevance and conformity of communication on technical and regulatory matters in line with The Body Shop procedures and positioning;
• Ensure successful follow up: all the test results are available on time (formulation, stability, challenge test, safety test);
• Create, send and compile all official documents through development phases (Formula approval, workflows, Officialisation);
• Anticipate fails and include plan B in retroplanning when relevant;
• Alert the line manager and propose an action plan and evaluate impact on timing or cost, for any formula related issue;
• Keep all stakeholders informed on the progress of projects;
• Develop knowhow and expertise;
• Maintain good documentation practices (R&I Sharepoint, other shared platforms and drives)
• Commercially control spend within your specific remit, work creatively and in a SMART way to reduce both overall costs whilst increasing efficiency

What we look for

  • In−depth knowledge of product formulation, cosmetic products, development phases;
  • Ability to maintain an overall view of operations within your role;
  • Ability to anticipate, prioritise and adapt to challenging situations in a fast paced retail environment
  • Knowledge of communication techniques (oral and written) and good presentation skills
  • Experience in using the MS Package – specifically PowerPoint, Word and Excel
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to build a broad network within research
  • Relevant qualification(ideally degree level) in Chemistry or Cosmetic science
