Your role in a nutshell

You know the person in Line of Duty and Silent Witness who gathers all the forensic data and pieces together all the disparate information to help solve the crime? Not the charming one, the REALLY smart one? Well we need someone just like that to head up our cosmetic R&D function here at The Body Shop. (and its ok if you are charming as well).

Instead of hair, teeth and blood samples we are talking thousands of sustainably sourced natural ingredients (over 4000) and hundreds of formulas every year that end up as the amazing products that our customers adore. Less gory – but equally fascinating and rewarding.

The data element is understanding the origin of our ingredients, the compliance with our unwavering stance against animal testing and our commitment to vegan certification. Your analytical brain will enable you to trace every ingredient back to the supplier and its original source and to report against our KPIs that make us the business we are. More about the role

Strategy: You will lead the development and implementation of the data analytics strategy for R&D with a constant close eye on the innovation and sustainability vision The Body Shop and Natura &Co.

Your grasp of data will enable you to transform raw information regarding all aspects of our ingredients to inform better decision-making regarding selection, sourcing, efficacy, efficacy sustainability and use in our products. You’ll be involved in every stage of the data journey from collection to processing, modelling and decision making and will leverage data and processes from Natura & Co to implement new ways of working. A true data specialist.

Delivery: As an expert in R&D data and tools you’ll on point to guarantee the quality, traceability, update and storage of all R&D data, formula and packaging key documents.

You’ll oversee the implementation of strategic projects including BCorp certification, Future Fit, Sustainability scoring as well as overseeing international initiatives.

Reporting: Your leadership and vision will help nurture an environment in which sustainable, innovative, customer centric ideas can be brought into the business and will ensure that a robust process is developed by which they can be reviewed, pursued or rejected. Not every idea will be a great one – and its your job to set the parameters and control the quality.

Comfortable being measured against economic, social and environmental metrics you’ll also create an innovation culture that drives efficiency regarding time to market, efficacy, safety and sustainability – all communicated to and aligned with The Body shop and Natura & Co KPIs

Leadership & Relationships: Under your guidance and management you’ll create and grow a team to manage R&D innovation and sustainability processes for The Body Shop and Natura – all made possible with excellent communication, collaboration and relationship building. You’ll drive best practices within the R&D function including the adoption of new methodologies such as Agile and Fast track projects.

With such a remit comes the need for broad and far reaching collaboration both internally with Design, Brand, Sourcing, Packaging, QA, ISC Technical Artwork and Sustainability as well as externally with Natura & Co, vendors and test houses. So be prepared to engage across and within departments and with outside partners.

What we look for

As well as the above we require some prior experiences and expertise:

  • You will possess a Degree in Chemistry or equivalent
  • You’ll have senior management experience in an R&D and Innovation development role – ideally in the beauty and cosmetics industry (but definitely in retail) with experience of other functions such as product development process and KPIs, sustainability, advanced research and bioinformatics
  • You’ll bring excellent knowledge of R&D development processes, innovation and sustainability concepts , data collections, traceability , evaluation and storage.

To back it all up you’ll have excellent knowledge of Microsoft business software programmes and demonstrate the following soft skills:

  • Highly organised and logical thinker – think back to the smart one in LOD.
  • Have a learning mind-set and be undeterred by challenge – sometimes it will take a lot of digging and analysis to get to the answer.
  • Be comfortable working collaboratively to leverage connections across the business and beyond
  • Have a genuine interest in sustainability and a desire to promote our sustainability strategy and initiatives
